About Saffron

Or as called Red Gold is one of the most precious spices in the world, made from the stigmas of a purple flower called Crocus sativus, which only blooms for a few weeks each year. It is native to Southwest Asia, and most of the world’s supply still comes from Iran.

It has been cultivated for thousands of years to be used in medicines, perfumes, dyes, and as a wonderful flavoring for foods and beverages. Saffron threads are thicker & flute looking at the top end and have a yellow tendril on the bottom end. Ground saffron is red to red-orange in color. Saffron is suitable for vegan, gluten-free, and paleo diets.

The exact time of finding the magic spice is not clear, however, based on many historical references the story started from the east, specially Middle East, as It has been cultivated for thousands of years to be used in medicines, perfumes, dyes, and as a wonderful flavoring for foods and beverages in this part of the world.
At that time Persia (current Iran) was a great empire consist of today Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Tajikistan, west part of China, west part of Pakistan, west part of Kyrgyzstan, east part of Iraq, east part of Syria, east part of Turkey, east part of Georgia,
So, it’s feasible that you may heard any of these countries as the origin of saffron, also, a few historical texts mention these countries as the first saffron lands. Now, you know the reason, anyhow still most of the world’s supply comes from Iran.

Saffron is a powerful antioxidant, improves mood and treat depressive symptoms, has cancer-fighting properties, acts as an aphrodisiac, reduces appetite and aid weight loss, reduces heart disease risk factors, lowers blood sugar levels, improves eyesight in adults with age-related macular degeneration, improves memory in adults with Alzheimer’s disease, works as erectile dysfunction remedy and Saffron could hold promise as a seizure treatment.

Saffron also has hormonal health benefits Premenstrual Syndrome or PMS is caused by various hormones wreaking havoc at the same time. Although saffron benefits are numerous, however excessive consumption can increase body heat and involve some of the body’s endocrine glands, such as the liver, so same as everything else in life, we need to know the limits.
